For decades people have relaxed and meditated to soothing sounds, including recordings of waves lapping, desktop waterfalls and wind chimes. Lately, a new kind of sound therapy, often called sound healing or sound bath, has begun to attract a following. Also known as vibrational medicine, the practice employs the vibrations of the human voice as well as instruments that resonate to go beyond relaxation and stimulate healing.  These instruments are designed to resonate at certain frequencies and notes that can effect the body in a positive way.

Sound Healing  It’s an ancient therapy

While many people are only just discovering it, sound healing is actually a return to ancient cultural practices that used chants and instruments to restore health and relieve pain. Healing with sound dates back to most ancient cultures Greece when music was used in an attempt to cure mental disorders, Temple gongs ringing out to remind the villagers to be mindful, Singing bowls bringing a void into the mind to allow enlightenment to enter, Australian Aborigines with the didgeridoo or the American Indian with a drum – clearing the physical body and awakening the great spirit if you look closely every ancient culture will have some form of sound healing.

The power of sounds, sound therapy works

Sound therapy works on a vibrational level. Although we hear the sound with our ears the vibrations are felt with our whole body resonating in every single cell.  There are different types of sound therapy, all use special sounds that produce vibrations thought to improve brain waves giving a feeling of well being. This is how sound therapy can have such a profound effect on us. What sound healers have in common is a belief in the potency of sound to not only promote relaxation but relieve ailments, from common aches and pains to anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

How does Sound Therapy work

Sound healing uses different aspects of sound to improve your emotional and physical well-being. How it works depends on the method of sound healing therapy being used. A session may involve sitting or lying down either individually or in a group while listening to sounds produced from a range of instruments.  At Nature we can use Singing Bowls, Gongs, Drums, Chimes, Clapsticks and Bells during a sound bath.  No 2 sessions will ever be the same as each session is attuned to the participants.

What is acupuncture

Acupuncture is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is being practised for over 2000 years. The basis of Acupuncture is to bring the body into balance by restoring the flow of Qi. Qi (pronounced as “Chee” and also spelt as Chi or Ki) is vital energy that flows through channels known as meridians. If the flow of Qi in the meridians is disrupted, then disease may follow.

Acupuncture points

There are 14 major meridians with over 500 acupuncture points. By inserting fine needles into particular acupuncture points, the disruption can be corrected and the flow of Qi restored.

History

The Acupuncturist takes a detailed history and use traditional tongue and pulse diagnosis to assess your condition according to TCM. Then a prescription of acupuncture points specific to the individual will be used. Acupuncture points are usually stimulated using needles, but other methods such as moxa (heat), magnets, acupressure, laser and cupping can be used. All needles used are pre-sterilized disposables. The initial consultation will take around an hour with follow up consultations being 30 – 40 minutes, for most conditions treatment is 6 – 8 sessions.

Research

Acupuncture can be used for acute and chronic conditions but you do not need to be unwell to gain benefits as acupuncture is also used for wellness, relaxation and maintenance. Research has found that acupuncture may be effective in treating a range of disorders including digestive, emotional, general, gynaecological, musculo skeletal, neurological, respiratory and vascular.

Can Chinese medicine such as Acupuncture help men as well as women?

The answer is yes, there are many male issues that acupuncture can assist.

Acupuncture is well known for treating fertility problems, menopause and pregnancy.

If acupuncture treatment can help women what can it do for men? Let us explore what Chinese medicine can do to help males. There are specific health issues unique to men. Herbal medicines and acupuncture have a range of treatments that can help men with stress, sleep, digestive issues, prostate, high blood pressure. Acupuncture can also help with infertility issues in males.

Men are often not willing to talk about sensitive personal issues, and often neglect health issues until it’s too late. Early treatment of many male-related health issues can prevent the condition from escalating. Please note that the longer a condition persists the more treatment it will require.

A combination of diet, herbs and acupuncture treatment can really help males so please feel free to come along and have a confidential chat.

As well as these more personal issues acupuncture can help men and women with the process of giving up smoking, depression, anxiety and a host of invisible aliments. Acupuncture is part of the holistic school of medicine and therefore treats the whole with a view to treating the complete person and not just a specific problem. The body is one mechanism and therefore it is necessary to give attention to the whole body when looking for a cure for a specific health problem.

Acupuncture is also used to help reduce pain such as back pain, joint and neck pain in both men and women. Acupuncture treatment has also been known to help heal people who have had a stroke and have nerve damage as a result of the stroke.
