What is acupuncture

Acupuncture is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is being practised for over 2000 years. The basis of Acupuncture is to bring the body into balance by restoring the flow of Qi. Qi (pronounced as “Chee” and also spelt as Chi or Ki) is vital energy that flows through channels known as meridians. If the flow of Qi in the meridians is disrupted, then disease may follow.

Acupuncture points

There are 14 major meridians with over 500 acupuncture points. By inserting fine needles into particular acupuncture points, the disruption can be corrected and the flow of Qi restored.

History

The Acupuncturist takes a detailed history and use traditional tongue and pulse diagnosis to assess your condition according to TCM. Then a prescription of acupuncture points specific to the individual will be used. Acupuncture points are usually stimulated using needles, but other methods such as moxa (heat), magnets, acupressure, laser and cupping can be used. All needles used are pre-sterilized disposables. The initial consultation will take around an hour with follow up consultations being 30 – 40 minutes, for most conditions treatment is 6 – 8 sessions.

Research

Acupuncture can be used for acute and chronic conditions but you do not need to be unwell to gain benefits as acupuncture is also used for wellness, relaxation and maintenance. Research has found that acupuncture may be effective in treating a range of disorders including digestive, emotional, general, gynaecological, musculo skeletal, neurological, respiratory and vascular.

How naturopathy can help you find relief

Naturopathy harnesses the body’s innate ability to heal to address the root causes of your illness. This holistic approach involving your body, mind and spirit, emphasize on wellness, awareness, optimal health and prevention. Naturopathy treats the underlying condition rather than the symptoms.

Types of healing systems

Naturopathy combines a number of healing systems to come up with the best suited treatment plan for each individual based on the nature of the condition. The healing systems used in naturopathy include;

  •         Herbal medication
  •         Acupuncture
  •         Nutritional supplements
  •         Dietary guidance
  •         Lifestyle changes
  •         Homeopathy

What type of conditions answer well to naturopathy?

Naturopathy can help you find relief from a number of physical, physiological and mental disorders such as;

  •         Chronic fatigue
  •         Anxiety
  •         Depression
  •         Allergies
  •         Digestive and gastrointestinal problems
  •         Hormonal imbalances
  •         High blood pressure
  •         Various cardiovascular diseases
  •         Skin disorders
  •         Fertility issues

Identifying your condition

Your naturopathy practitioner will first examine you and grill you about your medical history to get to the bottom of the condition. A first consultation usually lasts about an hour. During this time, the practitioner will ask you about your medical history as well as the history of diseases in your family.

You would also need to talk about your regular diet, lifestyle and work environment. Your naturopathy practitioner will conduct a number of physical tests. He or she will take a look at your mouth and irises, check your blood pressure and perform a zinc tally test.

If required, your practitioner will ask you to get further lab test. These may include blood sugar and urine analysis, mineral analysis of your hair tissue and gut dysbiosis test.

Treatment plan

Once your practitioner identifies the underlying causes of your illness, he or she will design an appropriate treatment plan. Follow up consultations take up to 30 minutes.

He or she will come up with a comprehensive plan that would include dietary and lifestyle changes, herbal medicine and even treatments such as massages and acupuncture. He or she will give you tips on managing stress.

The good thing about naturopathy is that none of the healing methods involved trigger side effects. You will simply have to master enough self-discipline to follow the recommended guidelines and make necessary changes.

Naturopathy focuses on helping each individual to become aware of their own conditions. You would greatly benefit from asking your practitioner questions and learning to listen to your body’s signals. These are the keys to healing as well as the prevention of unwarranted illnesses.

Acupuncture for infertility is one of the more popular and recognized alternative treatments out there. But, is this treatment actually effective? Studies indicate that acupuncture shows beneficial results in treating infertility in both men and women. Let us look at how acupuncture can positively impact your chances of getting pregnant.

Regulating menstrual cycle

According to ancient Chinese medical wisdom, acupuncture brings balance to your body’s ‘Ying’ and ‘Yang’ energies. Acupuncture needles gently stimulate your pressure points to release hormones and balance the flow of energy. If you currently experience irregular periods or heavy between during menstruation or between periods, acupuncture can help nudge your cycle back to normal.

Improving sperm quality

Some researchers found that acupuncture can reduce the number of structural abnormalities in sperm to increase the number of healthy sperm in men. Acupuncture corrects the larger imbalances in your body to boost sperm count.

Improving the quality of eggs

Acupuncture treatment increases the blood flow to your ovaries and this improves egg quality. You are likely to benefit from acupuncture if your blood tests reveal elevated FSH or low AHM. In Chinese medicine, such results indicate ‘kidney yin depletion’. In such cases, women who receive acupuncture treatment 3 months prior to trying to conceive, can improve their chances of getting pregnant.

Acupuncture as a complementary treatment

If you are already getting treatment for infertility, acupuncture can work in tandem with your conventional medication to balance your hormones and stimulate ovaries to further increase your chances of conceiving. If you’ve been experiencing poor responses to fertility medication, try to seek help from an acupuncture practitioner with your doctor’s blessings, once or twice a week. Acupuncture can restore balance to your body and prepare it to be more receptive to conventional medication. Some doctors even recommend getting acupuncture treatment directly before you get an IVF transfer and soon afterwards as well.

How does herbal medicine work? A present for a loved one this Christmas

Before the advent of modern medical science, most civilizations around the globe relied on herbal medicine to cure both mild and serious illnesses. Today, more and more people are turning to herbal medicine looking for relief from various conditions ranging from depression to allergies. Herbal medical practitioners focus on treating the underlying conditions of each patient rather than merely addressing the symptoms.

What is herbal medicine?

Herbal medical practitioners use different parts of plants in varying combinations. They rely on thousands of years of experience passed down from previous generations and some clinical data backed by trials. Different parts of each plant can have varying uses. Depending on your condition, your herbalist will give you various infusions to drink or use compresses on the affected area. Some use herbal baths, oil and steam inhalation to cure illnesses. Generally, there are no side effects of herbal medical treatment. After all, it is a gentle science that works with the body to heal.

Types of conditions that answer to herbal medicine

Herbal medicine can help you find relief from a large number of illnesses. But here are some of the common ailments that herbalists effectively treat.

  • Fatigue
  • Digestive problems
  • Joint and bone conditions
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Migraine and some neurological issues
  • Respiratory issues
  • Allergies

Initial consultation

When you first go for a consultation, your medical herbalist will ask you a lot of questions about your medical history, diet, and lifestyle. This will help him or her to get an in-depth understanding of your overall health. You should ideally reveal your entire medical history. He or she may also take your blood pressure and get some lab tests done.

Once the practitioner determines the root causes of your illness, he or she will design a treatment plan. Your tailor-made treatment plan will combine herbal remedies, physical care and dietary changes.

Herbal medicine is usually given in the form of a liquid solution. But you may also get a prescription for certain lotions, oils and herbal tablets.

Follow up consultations

You will need to visit your herbal medicine practitioner’s office a few more times to assess progress. Afterwards, you would most probably have to go for checkups once in 3 or 6 months.

Herbal medicine takes longer to even start working in comparison to orthodox medicine. This is because herbal medicine works in a gentler and more subtle manner. The effects of herbal medicine however last long. You should begin to feel healed and invigorated after you complete your treatment.

A traditional Chinese therapeutic practice, acupuncture is typically used to treat pain and in some cases decrease inflammation and boost the immune system’s ability to respond well. Acupuncture practitioners insert thin needles through key points in your body to stimulate muscles, nerves and connective tissues to trigger your body to release its natural painkillers (endorphins). Let us take a detailed look at the practice and how it can help relieve pain.

How can acupuncture help you?

If you suffer from certain chronic or recurrent medical issues such as lower back pain, serious menstrual cramps or headaches, acupuncture is a safe remedial option. Here is a list of other medical conditions that generally respond well to acupuncture.

  •         Certain respiratory disorders
  •         Knee pain
  •         Labour pain
  •         Chemotherapy induced vomiting
  •         Toothaches

How to choose a practitioner?

First of all, talk to your doctor about your decision. He or she will be able to tell you whether acupuncture is a safe choice for your particular condition. Secondly, check the acupuncture practitioner’s credentials and experience. If you possibly can, talk to his or her former patients to determine how effective the treatment can be. Before you book an appointment for the actual therapy session, meet the practitioner for a consultation session and find out if you would personally feel comfortable with his or her approach.

What to expect?

Most practitioners use a combination of Eastern and Western approach to the practice to treat their patients. Your practitioner will first examine and talk to you about the medical condition to properly identify the issue and come up with a treatment plan.

During the procedure you are unlikely to feel pain apart from mild aching sensations. A typical treatment involves around 5 to 20 thin needles which the practitioner will insert at various depths into strategic points in your body.

Once the needles are in place, your practitioner may gently twirl those or apply heat depending on the treatment plan. The needles should be out of your body within 10 to 20 minutes.

Most people feel relaxed and rejuvenated after their acupuncture sessions. While it is tough to definitively measure the benefits of acupuncture, most people find it helpful in managing their medical conditions.
