Acupuncture and its benefits

Acupuncture is a holistic health technique derived from traditional Chinese medicine practices in which trained practitioners stimulate specific points on the body by inserting thin needles into the skin. Remarkably, although acupuncture uses needles, treatments are relatively pain-free. Indeed, one of the most popular uses of acupuncture is to naturally reduce chronic pain throughout much of the body without the use of drugs that can cause unwanted side effects.

Benefits of Acupuncture

Presently, acupuncture is used to treat conditions like muscle spasms and pain, chronic back problems and pain, headaches, neck pain, osteoarthritis, knee pain, digestive problems & depression.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Acupuncture that is usually considered safe when done using sterile needles by an experienced, well-trained practitioner. However, it is vital to always go to a practitioner who is well trained in acupuncture as well as to a facility that is quite cautious in using acupuncture needles. If Acupuncture is not properly performed with clean needles it can pose a great risk.

Herbal Medicines

Herbal medicine has its origins in ancient cultures. It involves the medicinal use of plants to treat disease and enhance general health and wellbeing. People generally are now moving towards using alternative natural herbal medicines from lab-synthesized pharmaceutical medicines.

Medical uses for Specific herbs as medicine

Herbal medicines work to program your body to a condition of natural balance so that healing takes place naturally. Different herbs used work on different systems of the body. These herbal medicines are available as over the counter health supplements and blended with vitamins; available as herbal vitamin pills.

Some of the herbs that are normally used in herbal medicine as active ingredients, and their traditional uses, include:

chinacea

To stimulate the immune system and aid the body in fighting infection. Used to treat ailments such as boils, fever, and herpes

Dong Quai

Used for gynecological complaints, such as premenstrual tension, menopause symptoms, and period pain. Some studies indicate that dong quai can lower blood pressure

Garlic

Used to reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering levels of blood fats and cholesterol. The antibiotic and antiviral properties of garlic mean that it is also used to fight colds, sinusitis and other respiratory infections

Ginger

Many studies have shown ginger to be useful in treating nausea, including motion sickness and morning sickness. Ginger has been shown to be effective against exercise-induced muscle pain.

Ginkgo biloba

Commonly used to treat poor blood circulation and tinnitus. Ginkgo contains high levels of flavonoids and terpenoids, which are compounds known for their strong antioxidant effects. Ginkgo has been repeatedly evaluated for its ability to reduce anxiety, stress and other symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline associated with aging.

Ginseng

Generally used to treat weakness, for example during recovery from illness. Also used to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels, however overuse of ginseng has been associated with raised blood pressure.

Hypericum

Commonly known as St John’s wort. Studies have suggested that St John’s wort is just as effective as some pharmaceutical antidepressants in treating mild to moderate depression. It is also used for anxiety and insomnia.

Purchase herbal medicine from a reputed pharmacist or supplier

Not all herbal medicines that are sold are safe. Always purchase products from a reputable practitioner or pharmacist. Unregulated herbal medicines from overseas may not be manufactured to the same quality and standard as regulated medicines and have been found to have dangerous levels of lead, mercury or arsenic, which can cause serious health problems.

Acupressure Points for labor and birth

Acupressure is the application of external force on certain pressure points of the body. It can be done either by using fingers, or sometimes even by using feet, knees, elbows, and legs.

Acupressure & pregnancy

Acupressure has a ton of benefits right from releasing energy blockages, encouraging the baby to take an appropriate position for delivery, bring relief from pain, maintain proper hormonal levels, and so on. Since acupressure releases energy, it ends up affecting the hormones and increases blood circulation, which makes it quite beneficial in the first 3 months of the pregnancy and the final month.

Does Acupressure labor really work?

Studies revolving around acupressure to start labor are not as widespread as others. However, the ones that exist seem to hint towards a positive answer. At times, using acupressure techniques could cut down the duration of labor leading to speedy delivery. The pressure points used in the procedure assist the baby in moving down the birth canal which triggers the labor and assists in easy delivery as well.

When is it safe to use Acupressure for inducing labor?

For pregnant women, the acupressure spots must be triggered only if you are past your due date and yet there are no signs of a delivery taking place, your labor has been induced but muscles lack the strength for contractions and active labor is yet to begin and the amniotic sac has broken already.

Tips that provide comfort with Acupressure labor

  • Try out a few breathing exercises to calm down the body before beginning the process.
  • Acupressure massage to induce laborcan be conducted in any order of the points.
  • Bladder 28 & 48, stomach 29 and kidney 3 points are quite successful in reducing any pain during labor.
  • Spleen 6, large intestine 4 and gallbladder 21 are the points that help the body get ready for delivery.
  • Having your feet rubbed as you deliver the baby can bring your immense relief.
  • Using the acupressure points while delivery is ongoing can help reduce the pain quite a bit.

The effects of acupressure vary from person to person. Pregnant women can experience the onset of labor within an hour of applying pressure or even take as long as the next day. By making use of acupressure points for labor pain and delivery, you can ensure that the process is smooth and comfortable for you and look forward to taking care of your newborn child.
